The Vice-President is elected by an Electoral College, which consists of the members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha (both elected and nominated members).
The Vice-President holds office for 5 years from the date he enters office. However, he continues to hold office until his successor assumes charge. In case of death, resignation, or removal, a fresh election is held. During the vacancy, the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha may discharge the duties of the Chairman.
As per Article 66(1) of the Constitution, the Vice-President is elected by the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote, and voting is done by secret ballot.
A candidate must:
Be a citizen of India
Be at least 35 years of age
Be eligible for membership of the Rajya Sabha
Not hold any office of profit under the Government of India or State (except President, Vice-President, Governor, or Union/State Ministers).
